This research delves into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marginalized businesses in Oakland, California, exploring their immediate survival needs and challenges in accessing emergency aid. Through deep listening sessions with BIPOC business owners, common themes emerged, including culturally insensitive responses from funders and the City of Oakland, exacerbation of pre-existing disparities, and the need for culturally affirming emotional care. The study offers interventions to support business survival and community vibrancy, emphasizing the importance of inclusive support systems and partnerships.

The purpose of this study is to identify gaps in resources and support for Black, Latine, and Pacific Islander community members when seeking care related to reproductive health, pregnancy, and postpartum support in Oakland, California. In addition, our research investigated contributors to economic instability for families of color in Oakland, including correlations with preterm birth. Finally, study findings inform advocacy for policy changes that improve systems impacting Oakland families’ financial and health conditions.

Through candid sharing, business owners in this study shed light on systemic struggles they’ve experienced during the pandemic. The analysis underscores the racialized impacts of Covid-19 and highlights the integral link between business owners' mental well-being and the vitality of their businesses. It suggests a path forward for a financial institution deeply committed to its community of borrowers.
